Jewellery Care Guide

Understanding how to properly care for your jewellery can help maintain its beauty and shine for years to come. Certain metals and gemstones require different care instructions and cleaning methods to avoid the risk of damaging them.

Scratches

Always remove your jewellery if there is any chance it may get scratched or broken. Activities such as gardening, moving furniture, playing sports, cleaning etc. can potentially damage your jewellery. Be extra mindful of soft gemstones such as opals, turquoise and pearls as they are highly susceptible to scratches, cracks and breakage. Light scratches can also build up over time on metals therefore your jewellery may need re-polishing by a professional to remove them.

2

Sunlight

Sunlight and heat can affect gemstones and metals durability and colour. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause gemstones to fracture and prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause some coloured gemstones to fade or discolour.

3

Chemicals

Exposure to chemicals can damage or discolour precious metals and may harm some coloured gems.  Such harmful chemicals include chlorine, ammonia, bleach, perfumes, salt water, hair sprays and topical creams / lotions. Take off your jewellery to apply lotions or creams.

4

Cleaning

To remove built up grime on your silver or gold jewellery, place items in a bowl of warm water with a touch of mild dish soap then use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the piece. In between cleans, you can use a polishing cloth or a damp cloth to gently rub over the piece. All sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time but using a polishing cloth regularly will help keep the silver bright and shiny.

5

Storage

Jewellery can easily get scratched, damaged or tarnished if it is not stored properly. Keep your jewellery stored away from sunlight, heat and moisture in a protective jewellery pouch or box. Jux Jewellery pieces come in a box or pouch which is the perfect place to store them.

6

Sapphires

Sapphires are relatively hard (second to diamonds on the Mohs scale) which make them a great choice for everyday wear. To clean, simply wipe with a damp cloth or gently scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush in warm water.
